ARRIVAL
- Trailers should approach Canbury Gardens from Richmond Road using
only Woodside Road turning right into Lower Ham Road.
Under no circumstances use Bank Lane -
a traffic island prevents long vehicles turning.
- A one way traffic system will operate on Lower Ham Road northwards
from Bank Lane towards Richmond Rd.
- Off-load trailers on Lower Ham Road only. Take care not to obstruct
the road or cause congestion. Trailers and towing vehicles must then
be removed immediately to the trailer parks at the Hawker
Centre.
Trailers must not be left on Lower Ham Road - ('Good
neighbour' policy).
Cars may be parked in the Tiffin Boys School Car Park on London Road
but this is a 25 minute walk from the boathouse.
RIGGING OF BOATS
- Boats must be rigged on the grass areas only in Canbury Gardens.
Please KEEP OFF THE FLOWER BEDS.
- Please bring your own trestles and lashings, (in case of high winds).
- Boats should be rigged with bows pointing towards the river with
lowest start numbers closest to the river, since they should boat
first.
Do not rig on the towpath or cycle track next to
the river as these
are public rights of way. Take care crossing them.
Do not leave boats, trestles or equipment next to
the river or
in front of the boathouse (which is for the use of T.S.B.C., K.R.C.
and K.U.B.C. only).
REGISTRATION
Registration opens at 0800 hrs (Division 1), 0900 hrs (Division
2) and 1100 hrs (Division 2) on the first floor of the Boathouse.
CLUBS WILL BE DIVIDED INTO ALPHABETICAL GROUPS TO SPEED UP CHECK
IN.
- Completed ARA Entry Forms should have been received before check
in. If registration numbers are incomplete or Day Tickets need to
be purchased, this must be completed before numbers will be issued.
- All entry fees must be received before numbers will be issued.
- All boats should have an Empacher slot. The plastic number should
be fitted securely into the Empacher slot.
Any number not returned after the race will incur
the forfeit of the £5 deposit lodged against it.
- The card number should be attached to the outer garment
of each sculler/bow person securely with pins at each corner.
- The cloth number should be attached to the racing kit
of each sculler/bow person securely with pins at each corner.
CREWS WHOSE NUMBERS CANNOT BE READ, WILL NOT BE TIMED
If your boat is not registered for use on the Thames upstream of
Teddington lock, collect a visiting competitor's badge for your boat
at the same time at a cost of £1 each.
BOATING from Canbury Boathouse
Division 1 - Boating from 8.50 till
9.20 for 10.00 start
Division 2 - Boating from 10.30 till
10.50 for 11.30 start
Division 3 - Boating from 13.00 till
13.20 for 14.00 start
Allow yourself plenty of time for the Control Commission check
and to boat and paddle to the start.
A good quality quad or four will take 30 minutes. Younger crews, particularly
scullers, may take double that time.
- Please ensure that your blades/sculls are ready to hand before
you attempt to boat, but not on the raft.
- Boats must comply with the A.R.A. Safety Code of Practice otherwise
Control Commission will not allow you onto the water and you will
delay others from boating.
- Boats should be launched with bows facing upstream and should
clear the raft quickly. ADJUST AFLOAT.
- Emergencies excepted, you may not return to the raft until after
you have finished racing.
Division 2 will not be allowed to boat while Division 1 is disembarking.
Boathouse landing stage will be marked for boating and disembarking.
Obey the rules.
BOATING from Kingston Grammar School or Walbrook
& R.C.C.
It may be possible to boat from these two clubs but you must gain
permission from the clubs before the day.
- Allow yourself plenty of time for the Control Commission check and
to boat and paddle to the start.
- No practice starts or race pace warm up will be allowed in the marshalling
area.
- Allow plenty of time for check in procedures at KRC in Canbury Park
and your return through the traffic to chosen boating venue.
PROCEEDING TO THE START
- During the periods of River Closure, which span each race, the
Race Rules concerning navigation will apply.
- At all other times The Thames Navigation Byelaws will apply
to all river users. Keep to the Middlesex (starboard) bank when proceeding
upstream Keep well in, downstream traffic has right of way.
- Observe any directions given to you by a marshal/umpire or the
Environment Agency Navigation Officers.
Safety: Crews must be upstream of Raven's Ait 10
minutes prior to the start of division 1
Safety: Crews must be downstream of Hampton Bridge and upstream
of the first buoy on Dittons Bend 10 minutes prior to the start
of divisions 2 & 3.
Safety: Crews arriving late must stop when instructed
and await permission to proceed up/downstream from the umpire/marshal
at that point.
IF YOU HINDER A CREW WHICH IS RACING YOU WILL BE LIABLE TO DISQUALIFICATION.
Coming from below Kingston Bridge:
At Kingston Railway Bridge: DO
NOT USE THE CENTRE ARCH - keep well to the right and use the
Middlesex (RIGHT) navigation arch. Watch out for moored boats.
At Kingston Road Bridge: DO NOT USE THE CENTRE ARCH
- keep well to the right and use the Middlesex (RIGHT OF CENTRE) navigation
arch or the Middlesex Bank arch (RIGHT HAND SIDE). Watch out for moored
boats.
Coming from Molesey Lock or KGS Boathouse:
Allow plenty of time to pass through the lock and reach your marshalling
position.
MARSHALLING
NO PRACTICE STARTS ETC. WILL BE PERMITTED IN THE
MARSHALLING AREA
DIVISION 1
1. Marshals will be situated at intervals in the reach above Raven's
Ait to ensure crews are in proper postion. Please ensure you are lined
up in number order. Crews to queue along Middlesex Bank.
2. Find your place quickly and keep in close to the banks.
Please co-operate with instructions from the race marshals.
3. Competitors must not cross the river in the 10 minutes prior
to the start of the race.
4. All competitors must be in their marshalling positions by 5
minutes before the start of the race.
DIVISIONS 2 AND 3
5. Marshalling numbers will be situated at intervals in the reach above
Dittons Bend.
Crews with ODD numbers to queue along Surrey Bank
Crews with EVEN numbers to queue along Middlesex Bank
6. Find your place quickly and keep in close to the banks. Please co-operate
with instructions from the race marshals.
7. Competitors must not cross the river in the 10 minutes prior to
the start of the race.
8. All competitors must be in their marshalling position by 5
minutes before the start of the race.
THE START
The river between Hampton Court Bridge and Steven's Eyot will be closed
to all navigation except competitors at 09.00-12.45 (Division
1 & 2) and 13.30-16.00 (Division 3)
- 2 minutes before the start of the race: Make sure that you
are ready to race and move up towards the start when instructed to
by the race marshals.
- The Turning Marshals will instruct each crew/sculler to
turn around a marshalling launch for Division 1 and marshalling buoys
for Divisions 2 & 3 and paddle downstream in the centre of the
river to the start line. Do not easy again unless told to do so by
the Start Marshal.
- The Start Marshal will call your number and say "GO"
about 40 metres before the timing line. Crews will be started at approximately
15 second intervals.
THE RACE
- Keep to the centre of the river during the race and to the Surrey
(starboard) side of any buoys on the course.
- Crews being overtaken must give way. The slower crew should move
to strokeside (port/ Middlesex bank).
Safety: DO NOT IMPEDE OVERTAKING CREWS.
- At Raven's Ait all crews must use the Surrey (starboard) channel:
Safety: DO NOT OVERTAKE IN THIS CHANNEL.
- Use the Centre or Surrey Centre Arch at Kingston Bridge and the
Centre or Surrey Arch at Kingston Railway Bridge.
- You must respond to any instructions given by the umpires/observers
stationed along the course. Failure to do so may incur a penalty.
The Chief Umpire will be at Canbury Boathouse for 30 minutes after
each division.
Safety: If you have an accident or observe any incident, inform
a Race Official as soon as possible.
THE FINISH
THE FINISH IS THE DOWNSTREAM END OF CANBURY BOATHOUSE
Safety: Finish to the Middlesex side of Steven's Eyot but
the starboard side of any buoys.
- All crews/scullers must pass down the Middlesex channel
at Steven's Eyot. Move across well before the finish and paddle to
the downstream end of Steven's Eyot before stopping or attempting
to turn.
Safety: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STOP OR TURN AT THE FINISH
AFTER THE FINISH
Safety: All crews/scullers must paddle to the downstream end of Steven's
Eyot before stopping or attempting to turn. Please co-operate
with instructions from the race marshals.
Crews returning to Canbury Boathouse:
- At the downstream end of Steven's Eyot should then turn to Surrey
(starboard) and use the Surrey channel to paddle upstream to the
landing stage.
- Disembark quickly. DO NOT LINGER ON THE STAGE
Crews returning to a Boating Area above Kingston Road Bridge:
- At the downstream end of Steven's Eyot should turn to Middlesex
(port) and paddle back upstream.
- Crews returning from Division 1 may be held downstream of Raven's
Ait awaiting the end of Division 2. Coaches to ensure crews have suitable
clothes for waiting.
Safety: Keep close in to the Middlesex bank and the bank side
of the buoys marking the course.
IF YOU HINDER A CREW WHICH IS RACING YOU WILL BE LIABLE
TO DISQUALIFICATION.
LOADING TRAILERS
When you are ready to load after the second or third divisions collect
your trailer and proceed along Richmond Road towards Kingston and turn
down Woodside Road, turning right into Lower Ham Road as you did when
you arrived.
Safety: Please be careful not to obstruct the road or cause
congestion.
RESULTS AND PRESENTATIONS
- Timing of this event is by Mikrotime Sport Systems.
- Provisional results for each division will be posted as soon as
they are available (almost realtime).
- Final results will be posted once the Chief Umpire has added any
penalties incurred or enacted any disqualifications.
- Prizes will be presented for both divisions between 3.30 and
4.00 p.m.
SAFETY
The organisers anticipate and expect that all competitors and coaches
will carefully evaluate stream conditions and not proceed afloat unless
they or their crews are competent and experienced to do so. They
will be expected to know and comply with the requirements of the A.R.A.
Water Safety Code especially those pertaining to boats and the wearing
of buoyancy aids by coxswains.
- Every competitor should familiarise themselves with the Accident
Plans attached.
- IN THE EVENT OF A SERIOUS ACCIDENT ALL CREWS MUST STOP ROWING IMMEDIATELY
AND RETIRE FROM THE RACE. TRY TO MOVE OUT OF THE RACING LINE AND WARN
OTHER CREWS.
- The incident must be reported to an official as soon as possible,
so that a rescue can be initiated if necessary.
- In the event of the race being stopped, an audible warning will
accompany the instruction to stop racing. Before you easy make sure
it is safe to do so, and if possible pull across into the bank. This
will leave the centre of the river clear for any rescue craft that
may be needed.
- First Aid facilities will be available at Canbury Boathouse and
a mobile unit will also be in radio contact with the Safety Adviser
and Safety Boats.
The Organisers and the Race Committee will monitor stream condition
daily from the Wednesday before the race.
- Depending on conditions some categories/boat types may be cancelled
- depending upon experience.
- Notices and updates will be posted on the front page of this web
site.
- Please note that the organisers of The Tiffin Small Boats Head
of the River Race cannot be held responsible for any damage or injury
sustained.
